The U.S. military on Monday night carried out airstrikes on three offices and "partnership gatherings" used by Iraq-based Kataib Hezbollah, leaving three U.S. soldiers in a critical condition, the White House said.
A statement from the US headquarters said initial assessments showed that the US airstrikes at the request of President Joe Biden "logically killed several Kataib Hezbollah attackers."
An Iranian-backed terrorist group previously guaranteed credit for using a directional assault robot to focus U.S. forces on Erbil Air Base on Monday morning, the White House said.
A claim by US Public Safety Committee representative Adrienne Watson stated that "US airstrikes and support gatherings in three areas used by Kataib Hezbollah have automatically zeroed in on advanced drone exercises."
Kataib Hezbollah's office was attacked at 8:45 pm. ET, according to CENTCOM. "There is no indication that the lives of ordinary citizens have been affected," the claim said.
According to the US Overseer of Public Knowledge (DNI) site, Kataib Hezbollah is a Shia extremist group that "represents a high threat" to US personnel in both Iraq and Syria.
The rally, it said, would require the ousting of US and coalition forces from Iraq and the installation of an Iran-aligned government there. The assembly also works in Syria, the DNI says.
Guard Secretary Lloyd Austin advised the president on Monday evening, the White House said. The president was presented with a few choices, and Biden requested a strike during that call.
In an explanation, Austin said Monday's airstrikes came in light of the Erbil attack and various strikes against US forces in Iraq and Syria.
Austin called the US airstrikes "significant and proportionate".
